Heamoor Community Primary School - Pupil Illness & Medicines

Pupil Illness & Medicines

This section outlines how we manage illness, first aid and the administration of medicines to ensure every child is kept safe, supported and well cared for during the school day.

Illness at School
We want every child to feel safe, cared for and supported during their time at school. To help us do this, it is essential that parents and carers provide up‑to‑date contact details so we can reach you quickly if your child becomes unwell or has an accident. If hospital treatment is ever required, we ask that a parent, carer or trusted family friend is available to accompany them. Please let us know straight away if any of your contact information or circumstances change.

We are fortunate to have several members of staff with first aid qualifications, enabling us to respond promptly and sensitively to minor injuries and short‑term sickness. However, we can only manage low‑level, temporary symptoms. If your child is unwell or showing signs of illness, we ask that they remain at home so they can rest and recover fully. We do not have facilities to care for children who are poorly during the school day, and keeping them in school can place others at risk of infection.
In line with NHS guidance, children who have experienced vomiting must stay off school for 48 hours from the point at which the sickness stops. Teaching staff cannot be released to take children home during the day, so it is vital that we can contact you promptly if your child becomes unwell while in our care.

To support children with ongoing health needs, it is important that staff are aware of any medical conditions or changes. All new families complete a Pupil Welfare Form as part of the School Admissions Booklet, and we remind parents each year—via our newsletter—to update us if their child’s medical circumstances have changed. Parents and carers are responsible for informing the school of any condition that may require special consideration, treatment or adjustments during their time at Heamoor School.

Medicines
To ensure children’s safety, no medication can be administered in school unless a parent or guardian has visited the office to explain the dosage and complete the required consent form. Without this signed authorisation, we are unable to give any medicine. All medication must be brought to the school office in its original, clearly labelled container.
