Empathy, tolerance, respect and responsilibity are an integral part of our personal enrichment and development of every child at Heamoor CP School.
PSHE and SMSC education is a planned programme of learning though which pupils acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to manage their lives now and in the future as World Citizens.
Our whole school approach develops the qualities and attributes pupils need to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society. Through thoughtful and wide-ranging tasks and assemblies the children enjoy reflecting on themselves, others and the wider community.
PSHE is vital to safeguarding and we strive to develop an awareness of personal safety through a range of experiences, themes and activities. Children are encouraged to take part in a wide range of activities and experiences across and beyond the curriculum, contributing fully to the life of our school and community.
Our successful PSHE and SMSC teaching and learning gives every child the opportunity to recognise their own worth, work well with others and become increasingly responsible for their own learning.
Every month the school celebrates a special PSHE/SMSC theme which links to the three areas of PSHE (Health and Wellbeing, Relationships & Living in the Wider World) and Spirtual, Moral, Social and Cultural Education (SMSC).
These themes run as a thread through each month, starting with a launch assembly, followed by further assemblies exploring different elements of the theme, compliemented by singing assemblies and a wide-range of corresponding tasks for the whole school to enjoy.
Outcomes of the tasks are shared in assemblies in a cycle which ensures children's work and achievements are celebrated. These outcomes are displayed around the school in corridors and classrooms further promoting the values and guidance our PSHE and SMSC teaching and learning gives our children.
Through special themed days and weeks we explore historial figures, different cultures and countries from around the world and international/world celebration days.
These also strengthen our Religious Education teaching and learning across the school, developing our children's awareness of the different World faiths, promoting tolerance and respect for them and their followers.
Through the Social strand of SMSC each month's theme also links to 'British Values' these are:
- Rule of Law
- Individual liberty
- Mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.
Discussion, watching video clips, questions and answers time and stories are starting points which allow our children to start to explore and reflect upon what these 'British Values' mean and how they affect them on a daily basis. We believe that these experiences give our children the opportunity to develop and demonstrate skills and attitudes that will allow them to particpate fully in and contribute positively to life in modern Britain.
