Heamoor Community Primary School

Untitled

As in Year 3 the children will be receiving daily Literacy and Numeracy sessions following the National Strategies. In our topic work this term we shall be looking at Ancient Egypt which will be linked to our History, Literacy, Art, ICT, Music, Science and Geography.

This will be my second year teaching this class, so we can hit the ground running, working hard from day one! I am really looking forward to teaching these fantastic topics and seeing all of the familiar faces once again. Please remember, I am very approachable and if you have any questions about any aspect of school life please come and see me. After school is usually the best time and if you need a longer chat please make an appointment at the office.

If your child brings Dinner Money to school it is very helpful if in is in a named purse, wallet or envelope. This helps your child become more independent and keeps the money safe.

Also, any money for swimming or educational visits should be given to the class teacher along with the appropriate permission slip. This makes organisation of such events much more efficient. Obviously large amounts; for residential trips, can go directly to the office.

Literacy:
A rage of text will be studied this year including, Narrative, Instructional Writing, Poetry, Factual, Persuasive & Non-Fiction.
Numeracy :
The key aspects will be covered including: Using and applying number, Data Handling, Shape and Space, Multiplication, Division and Calculations. *Practice of multiplication tables at home will prove to be invaluable.*
Topics: Egypt, Settlements (India) & Tudors

Outdoor Learning

We are very lucky to have a large outdoor area at school and to fully make use of it, we ask that your child has a set of outdoor clothes. Due to the nature of the weather, we ask that these clothes (and footwear) be kept in school so that we can take advantage of a break in the weather. We have worked hard over the last year to integrate the outdoor area into the curriculum and we would love the children to take a full active part in this.

Residential Visits Trips
Throughout the year educational visits in the locality will take place where appropriate. We will always inform you of such events. For this reason we would appreciate it if you could keep us to date with any relevant medical information and an up to date contact information.

Currently a Year 4 Residential trip is being planned for the Summer Term. I would like to just give you plenty of notice to make the cost of the trip easier to plan for. We will naturally endeavour to keep costs to a minimum as staff go on these voluntarily, However fuel and accommodations costs continue to be high. These trips are a well planned educational experience and have also been great fun in the past!

Homework and home learning tasks

In addition to reading at home, in the next couple of weeks your child will receive a spelling sheet focussing on specific word patterns and spelling skills. Your child will need to spend time learning the spelling of these words over the week ready for a spelling test on Fridays. In addition to this, they will also need to write spelling sentences, putting 5 words into a context. This book also needs to be given in on Friday morning. We understand that it is difficult for children to read every night, because of clubs and other commitments. We do recommend that you read with them at least 4 times a week. Their reading will be closely monitored for comprehension of text, not just completion before they move on.

Maths home based tasks will be sent home throughout the year to reinforce specific Maths skills, usually linked to our termly class targets or areas we are exploring in the classroom.

Thank you for your support with these weekly tasks as your help and interest will have a very positive effect on your child’s progress.

If you would like to complete some other Numeracy linked work the following skills are a good place to start:

Basic counting practise
Telling the time
Starting their times tables
Using money on shopping trips.
Adding up the numbers on car number plates in traffic!
